What kind of aircraft is this?
It is not an “experimental”, “ultralight”, or a “kit plane”. It is a factory built, FAA-certified Special Light Sport Aircraft, the “Monsoon” SLSA, by Apollo Aircraft. We call it a delta-wing trike. Some call it a powered hang glider on steroids. Official category: Weight-shift control aircraft.

Is there an age limit?
We have flown people from ages 8 to 87.

Is there a weight limit?
We can fly with anyone up to 230 lbs. depending on conditions.

What do I wear?
We have a windproof flight suit and helmet for you. Depending on the daytime temperature just wear a warm under layer (fleece, sweats, etc.), as if you were going up to the mountains. Wear close toe shoes and socks, no sandals.

What if I am afraid of heights?
… so are most of us pilots! Even people who feel scared before take-off usually find that the stability of our aircraft and the experience of soaring, turns their fear into a calm exhilaration. We cater to adventurers and scaredy cats alike. If you become too nervous, we can bring you back to the runway without delay (Although this never happens).

Is it safe?
Yes. This is a new FAA Certified Light Sport aircraft, and a time-proven wing, made in the USA by Northwing. This wing design and hang-block has been tested to +6gs … which is 6400 pounds (the same weight as 2 Ford Ranger pickups) … without breaking or even deforming. The most dangerous part of your journey is the drive to the airport, so drive carefully!

How is the aircraft maintained?
The aircraft is maintained and inspected by a certified A&P aircraft mechanic, every 100 hours of flight time. This is much more strict than standard “annual” aircraft inspections.

What if the engine quits?
The aircraft is powered by a four-stroke Rotax aircraft engine that is extremely reliable. Engine failures are very rare. Remember this aircraft was designed as a gliding aircraft which flies and lands extremely well without an engine. We can set down just as softly with or without power.

I’m not interested in a lesson, just a tour. Do you do that?
This is better than a tour. We find that people enjoy learning a little bit about the aircraft and flight in general. You will have an opportunity to operate the aircraft controls, if you feel comfortable with that.  It is also fine if you never take the controls.

Yes, you will also have plenty of time to sit back, relax, and look around at this beautiful area.

Your introductory flight comes complete with an official flight certificate, and your flight time can be credited towards any future Sport Pilot license.

What will I learn in my first lesson?
The introductory flight is mainly about enjoying your time in the sky.   During your flight we will teach you the basics of safety, how to relax fully with flight, and how we operate the aircraft.  Then if you feel ready, you will be able to take the flight controls, with close supervision of the instructor, as long as you feel comfortable. Most people feel that learning to fly, even for a moment, is an experience that defies description.

Can I bring a camera or cell phone?
No. In an open cockpit aircraft, loose items are a risk for the propeller and folks on the ground. It is necessary for everything to be removed from your pockets. Trying to take pictures while in the air subtracts from your flying experience. We will record an HD video of your lesson, which will be made available to you.

Leonardo Da Vinci

When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things…

William Langewische

I ask people who don’t fly, “How can you not fly when you live in a time in history when you can fly?”

Orville Wright

The exhilaration of flying is too keen, the pleasure too great, for it to be neglected as a sport.

Wilbur Wright

More than anything else the sensation is one of perfect peace mingled with an excitement that strains every nerve to the utmost, if you can conceive of such a combination.

Richard Bach

Instead of our drab slogging forth and back to the fishing boats, there’s a reason to life! We can lift ourselves out of ignorance, we can find ourselves as creatures of excellence and intelligence and skill. We can be free! We can learn to fly! (Jonathan Livingston Seagull)

Amelia Earhart

Courage is the price that life extracts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not knows no release from little things.

From Wizard of Oz

Someday I’ll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me, Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away, above the chimney tops, that’s where you’ll find me. Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow, why then, oh why can’t I? If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, why oh why can’t I?
